Suarahati.org, Sidoarjo – UTSMAN bin Affan berasal dari kalangan bangsawan Suku Quraisy, kaya raya dan pengusaha yang sukses. Ia termasuk kelompok sahabat yang pertama-tama memeluk Islam. Dalam perjalanan pulang dari perniagaannya di Syam, ia sempat tertidur dan bermimpi. Dalam mimpinya itu ia mendengar sebuah seruan agar mereka yang tidur segera bangun, karena Ahmad telah bangkit di Makkah.
Setibanya di Makkah, ia segera menemui sahabatnya, Abu Bakar dan menceritakan mimpinya. Ternyata Abu Bakar telah memeluk Islam, dan menceritakan tentang dakwah baru yang disampaikan Nabi SAW. Utsman yang sebelumnya memang begitu takjub dan terpesona dengan ketinggian dan kemuliaan akhlak Nabi SAW, segera saja meminta Abu Bakar mengantarnya menghadap Rasulullah SAW untuk berba’iat memeluk Islam.
Ketika keislamannya diketahui keluarganya, pamannya yang bernama Hakam bin Abul Ash bin Umayyah menangkap dan mengikatnya dengan tali, kemudian berkata, “Aku tidak akan melepaskan ikatanmu selamanya, jika kau tidak kembali ke agama nenek moyangmu!” Namun dengan tegas Utsman berkata, “Demi Allah aku tidak akan meninggalkan agama ini selama-lamanya, dan tidak akan berpisah dengannya”. Melihat keteguhannya yang tidak tergoyahkan, akhirnya dilepaskan ikatannya.
Utsman bin Affan merupakan sahabat yang pengusaha dan kaya raya sebagaimana Abdurrahman bin Auf. Mereka berdua juga sangat dermawan, dan termasuk dari sepuluh orang yang dijamin masuk surga semasa hidupnya. Hanya saja tentang Abdurrahman bin Auf, Nabi SAW pernah bersabda bahwa ia akan masuk surga perlahan-lahan, dalam riwayat lain, dengan merangkak, karena hisab kekayaannya. Sebagaimana Nabi Sulaiman AS adalah nabi yang perlahan-lahan masuk surga karena hisab kekayaannya. Karenanya Nabi SAW menyatakan, “Abdurrahman bin Auf adalah Sulaimannya ummatku!” Tetapi menyangkut Utsman bin Affan, beliau justru menyatakan, “Tidak ada yang membahayakan Utsman, setelah apa yang dilakukannya hari ini.”
Ungkapan ini disabdakan Nabi SAW setelah apa yang dibelanjakan Utsman bin Affan di jalan Allah untuk Perang Tabuk. Pasukan yang dibentuk untuk menghadapi serangan Pasukan Romawi ini disebut dengan Jaisyul Usrah (Pasukan di Masa Sulit), karena waktu itu musim panas, kekeringan dan paceklik melanda Jazirah Arab. Tidak mudah menghimpun dana dan perbekalan sementara kebanyakan kaum muslimin sendiri dalam kesulitan menjalani hidup sehari-hari.
Utsman bin Affan yang tengah mempersiapkan kafilah dagang ke Syam dengan 200 ekor unta lengkap barang dan perbekalannya berikut 200 uqiyah, langsung dibelokkan ke Masjid Nabi SAW untuk Pasukan Tabuk. Itu belum cukup juga, ia menambah dan menambah hingga mencapai 900 unta dan 100 kuda, riwayat lain menyebutkan sebanyak 940 unta dan 60 kuda, lengkap dengan perlengkapan dan perbekalannya. Masih belum puas bersedekah, Utsman datang ke kamar Nabi SAW dan menyerahkan 700 uqiyah emas, riwayat lain menyebutkan 1000 atau 10.000 dinar, yang langsung diterima oleh tangan Rasulullah SAW sendiri.
Pada awal hijrah ke Madinah, Kaum Muhajirin mengalami kesulitan air. Sebenarnya ada mata air yang mengeluarkan air tawar yang segar dan enak yang disebut Sumur Raumah. Sayangnya mata air ini dikuasai oleh orang Yahudi, yang menjualnya satu geriba air dengan segantang gandum. Kaum Muhajirin yang kebanyakan meninggalkan kekayaannya di Makkah tentu saja tak mampu membayarnya.
Nabi SAW mengharapkan ada sahabat yang membeli telaga tersebut untuk kepentingan umat muslim, maka tampillah Utsman bin Affan memenuhi harapan Nabi SAW. Pada awalnya si Yahudi menolak menjualnya, maka Utsman bersiasat dengan membeli separuhnya saja. Si Yahudi setuju dengan harga 12.000 dirham, dengan pembagian, satu hari untuk Utsman dan satu hari untuk si Yahudi.
Ketika giliran waktu untuk Utsman, Kaum Muslimin dan Masyarakat Madinah yang membutuhkan air dipersilahkan untuk mengambilnya dengan gratis dan tanpa batas. Karena itu mereka menampung untuk dua hari. Ketika tiba giliran waktu untuk si Yahudi, tak ada lagi orang yang membeli air darinya sehingga ia kehilangan pendapatannya dari telaga tersebut. Akhirnya ia menjual bagiannya tersebut kepada Utsman seharga 8.000 dirham, sehingga Masyarakat Madinah bisa memperoleh air segar telaga tersebut kapan saja dengan cuma-cuma.
Ketika Kaum Muslimin di Madinah makin banyak dan masjid tidak lagi bisa menampung, Nabi SAW bermaksud melakukan perluasan dengan membeli tanah dan bangunan di sekitar masjid. Tampillah Utsman untuk merealisasikan maksud Nabi SAW tersebut, dan tanpa segan ia mengeluarkan 15.000 dinar. Begitupun setelah Fathul Makkah, Nabi SAW bermaksud memperluas Masjidil Haram dengan membeli tanah dan bangunan sekitar masjid, sekali lagi Utsman tampil memenuhi harapan Nabi SAW dengan mengeluarkan sedekah 10.000 dinar.
Masih banyak lagi kisah kedermawanan Utsman sehingga tak heran jika Nabi SAW berkata, bahwa teman beliau di surga adalah Utsman bin Affan. Satu peristiwa lagi di jaman Khalifah Abu Bakar, saat itu paceklik melanda kota Madinah, kaum musliminpun mengalami berbagai kesulitan. Ketika dilaporkan kepada Abu Bakar, ia berkata, “Insya Allah, besok sebelum sore tiba, akan datang pertolongan Allah.”
Pagi hari esoknya, datanglah kafilah dagang Utsman dari Syam yang penuh dengan bahan makanan pokok. Berkumpullah para pedagang, termasuk dari Kaum Yahudi yang biasa memonopoli perdagangan bahan makanan, mereka berlomba melakukan penawaran. Utsman berkata, “Berapa banyak kalian akan memberi saya keuntungan?”
“Sepuluh menjadi duabelas,” kata seorang pedagang.
“Ada yang lebih tinggi?” Tanya Utsman.
“Sepuluh menjadi limabelas,” pedagang lain menawar.
“Siapa yang berani menawarnya lebih dari itu, padahal seluruh pedagang Madinah berkumpul di sini?”
Utsman bertanya, “Ada yang berani memberi keuntungan sepuluh menjadi seratus, atau sepuluh kali lipat?”
“Apa ada yang mau membayar sebanyak itu?”
“Ada, yakni Allah SWT,” Kata Utsman dengan tegas. Para pedagang itupun berlalu pergi, dan Utsman membagi-bagikannya dengan cuma-cuma kepada warga fakir miskin Madinah dan mereka yang memerlukannya.
